iSimple module connects steering-wheel buttons with smartphone voice command

Modern smartphones are pretty much the do-all device for tech-forward drivers. However, law enforcement (and your fellow drivers) aren't too happy with your phone-fumbling while behind the wheel. iSimple thinks that it has a solution that will help drivers to access all of these devices' navigation, calling, messaging, and music features without touching the phone or lifting a finger from the steering wheel.

The iSimple InSeam is a hardware module installed behind your car's dashboard that gives the driver access to the voice actions already on his or her smartphone via the steering-wheel controls. At its core, InSeam is an FM transmitter with some intelligence built in, connecting to the factory radio by plugging into the antenna connection and sending its audio over an empty FM frequency, giving it nearly universal compatibility. Connections to steering-wheel controls and power for the unit are slightly less plug-and-play. There is also a microphone included for picking up voice commands and relaying them to the handset.

Once everything is installed, paired, and set up, drivers will be able to tap a button on their steering wheel to issue voice commands to initiate calls, send text messages, get turn-by-turn navigation, or call up local or Internet-streamed music apps without looking away from the road or taking a hand off of the steering wheel. When listening to music, the car's skip forward and back controls are also accessible. Audio for calls, spoken directions, music, and more will be piped into the cabin through the car's speakers, which are (in most cases) much easier to hear than a phone's built-in driver.

iOS 7 downloads causing network outages at several school campuses, activation server failures

As noticed by BusinessInsider, Apple’s release of iOS 7  is causing havoc for the networks of several college campuses and other schools where a large number of iOS device users are attempting to download the new OS. Some schools, including Ohio University, is even urging students to delay upgrading to iOS 7 as the network experiences network problems due to the high amount of traffic.
Others having WiFi issues  include New York University, Michigan University, and Western Connecticut State University. Those three schools haven’t confirmed iOS 7 is the cause of network outages today, but students on Twitter have noted that iOS 7 is likely the culprit.
We’ve learned that Apple has has communicated to retail stores and AppleCare that it is aware of the activation servers failing following today’s release of iOS 7.

iPHONE 5S

Now being called “Apple’s flagship phone”, this is the best iPhone currently available. Its improved internal components makes everything run faster – twice as fast, according to Apple representatives. Its home button no longer has an icon, it now has a silver or gold ring around it to signify the 5S-exclusive fingerprint scanner. The display is still 4-inch.

iPhone 5s is powered by a new A7 processor that is a 64-bit chip. It is the first 64-bit chip in a smartphone, which makes the phone literally 2X faster than the Iphone 5 (which is, in turn, 40X faster than the original iPhone). 5S also runs on OPENGL ES 3.0, making its graphics 56X faster than the original iPhone.

Apple has used a “motion coprocessor” called the M7 in the 5S which continually measures motion data with an accelerometer, gyroscope and compass support. It was designed to enable a new generation of fitness and health apps by letting apps use motion data without tapping into the A7.

Fingerprint Scanner – “Touch ID”

The iPhone 5S’ home button is able to act as both finger scanner and navigation control tool. The scanner holds another layer of security to your iPhone allowing you to use the fingerprint scanner in lieu of a passcode. If you place your thumb down on the saphire crystal home button, the iPhone will unlock.

Camera

The iPhone 5S has a dual-LED flash that makes the iPhone camera actually usable. It will be better, anyway, than the weak excuse of a bulb that other Apple phones have previously used. The dual-LED flash in the iPhone 5S will help make your pictures look more natural and balanced as the phone can combine the right percentage and intensity of the two bulbs to create 1,000 different variations of a flash.

Battery Life

The iPhone 5S has a slightly better battery life with 10 hours talk time, ten hours LTE browsing, and 250 hours standby. That is an improvement over the 8 hours talk time, 8 hours LTE, and 225 hours per day.

Pricing and Availability

The iPhone 5S 16GB will be $199, 32G version will be $299, and 64GB version will cost $399 – all with a new two-year contract. There is an unlocked contract-free version of the 5S for T-Mobile, but pricing begin at $650 for 16GB. The phone becomes available on Friday, Sept 20th.

Iphone 5C -Apple’s New Colorful Budget Phone

This is a new breed of iPhone. It has a plastic back, color-coat and can be yours for only $100. It looks as we expected, with a subtly curved hard-coated polycarbonate plastic back that is available in blue, green, white, yellow and pink (although it really looks red…).

The back of the phone is made from one single part.  No joints or lines. Each case is also steel-reinforced to help amplify the antenna. iOS7 will automatically match the color of your iPhone 5C out of the box. The phone is beautifully, unapologetically plastic” says Jony Ive. The iPhone 5C also comes with a series of very groovy looking silicone cases, with cheese grater holes that allows the color to shine through.

The iPhone 5C is basically the iPhone 5 in plastic. Its brain is the iPhone 5′s A6 Processor and it has an 8MP camera like the 5 as well. The 5C features the same 4-inch retina (326 ppi) screen as the iPhone 5. It has more LTE bands than any smartphones out there, alongside dual-band WI-FI, Bluetooth 4.0, and a slightly bigger battery. Good! It also has a front-facing HD camera which is designed to function better in low-light conditions.

Price

The 16GB iPhone 5C will cost $100 with a two year contract, the 32G model will be available for $200. Off contract prices are way higher: $550 and $650 respectively. Each version will be available for pre-order this Friday and for delivery by Sept. 20th.

Hawaiian Airlines Will Offer iPad Minis for In-Flight Entertainment

As if it were possible, going to Hawaii just got even better.  Starting on September 1, passengers flying Hawaiian Airlines (HA) will receive an iPad mini upon ascent into the air. Thanks to the airline’s contracting company Blue Avionics, its in-flight entertainment systems (IES) will be switching up to include 1,500 iPads on 14 Boeing 767-300 planes. Anyone on-board can rent a small tablet.

According to HA Vice President Blaine Miyasato, “Hawaiian Airlines’ signature on-board hospitality is already very popular with travelers, but we wanted to go even further to ensure our customers’ travel experience is more enjoyable. With the help of Bluebox Avionics, we’re building on our acclaimed inflight service by incorporating the latest in popular consumer tech products to enhance our in-flight entertainment options.”

With the Ipad mini, Hawaiian Airlines travelers can enjoy more than 100 hours of latest film releases, television shows, and a variety of interactive games. The iPad minis are complimentary in Business Class on all B767 routes and available for rent in Economy Class for $15 if reserved in advanced prior to boarding, and subject to availability, $17 on the spot.

Although the concept of iPads on a plane is not new (American Airlines and Alaska Airlines have been renting them for years), Hawaiian Air is the first to offer them for in-flight entertainment and to all (first and second class) passengers. HA is also the only carrier flying between U.S. Mainland and Hawai’i to offer complimentary meals and snacks in Economy Class.

Why don’t we all just fly ONLY to Hawaii – why bother going anywhere else? As they say in Hawaiian, A hui hou kākou or goodbye, until we meet again.

England-Based Research Firm Develops World’s Thinnest Keyboard

CSR, an England-Based tech firm, revealed what it calls the world’s thinnest wireless touch surface at an IFA preview in Berlin this weekend. The Bluetooth® Smart innovator’s keyboard measures less than half a millimeter thick, making it the perfect accessory for a similarly thin tablet. 

The flexible device combines low-power wireless technology with the latest in printable, flexible electronics and touch screen sensing allowing it to be used to extend the touch interface to tablets and smartphones. Both lightweight and flexible, the device can be integrated into a protective cover or used to create large touch zones on a laptop. It is thin enough to slip behind the pages of a notebook, and can be used to pick up handwriting and sketches from the nib of a modified pen.

CSR partnered with Atmel and Conductive Inkjet Technology (CIT) to develop the product, which uses Atmel touch silicon to sense multiple contact points on a surface and can offer a full touch surface or power optimized key protection. The use of an ultra-low power version of Bluetooth means a bulky battery isn’t needed. The product is truly svelt.

IFA in Berlin will run from September 6-11, 2013 and this product will be unveiled to customers for the first time. It will not be sold on the market, however, until 2014 and even then it will likely be open only to OEMs and manufacturers to integrate into their products.

2013 IT Salaries; 15 Titles Getting the

 Biggest Pay Raises

Certain IT titles will be getting sizable increases, according to data from RTH. At the top of the heap, based on percentage gains, are mobile application developers and wireless network engineers, who can expect a 9% and 7.9% increase in starting salaries, respectively, RHT reports.

RTH took into account 70 positions for its annual guide to U.S. tech salaries. Overall, base compensation for IT professionals is expected to increase on average by 5.3% within the year. The 15 positions expected to see a significant increase in salary within 2012 to 2013 are the following:

Nokia was experimenting with Android before Microsoft deal: Reports

Turns out, Nokia was secretly testing Android on its Lumia and Asha phones in case its Windows Phone efforts didn’t succeed.

According to a report in NYT’s Bits blog, a team within Nokia had working Android-powered Lumia phones long-before Microsoft deal came into picture.

NYT writes:

A team within Nokia had Android up and running on the company’s Lumia handsets well before Microsoft and Nokia began negotiating Microsoft’s $7.2 billion acquisition of Nokia’s mobile phone and services business, according to two people briefed on the effort who declined to be identified because the project was confidential.

Considering the condition of Nokia’s smartphone efforts right now, it is not surprising that Nokia was working on a plan B for its future.

In a separate report, The Verge notes that Nokia’s Android experimentation was not just limited to Lumia smartphones, under Project MView, a Nokia team was trying to put an Android fork on its low-end Asha phones. As per Verge’s sources, Nokia was planning to launch Android-running Asha devices in 2014.

The Verge notes:

Nokia uses a variety of codenames for projects, but this particular one — also codenamed “MView” for Google’s hometown of Mountain View — was designed to use a variant of Android on a low-end handset to maximize margins. We’re told the end result was planned to launch in 2014, but with the recent acquisition employees working on the projects do not know their fate. One of Nokia’s ideas was to fork its own version of Android in a similar way to Amazon for low-end devices.

Now that Microsoft has acquired Nokia’s smartphone business (pending regulatory approvals), whatever little hope was there for a Nokia Android phone, it is gone and we will probably never see Android running on Nokia phones.

Apple Will Release OS X 10.9 Mavericks in October

A new operating system, OS X 10.9 Mavericks is in release plans for Apple by the end of October. There are launch plans from Apple, even though there is news that the OS X Mavericks and iOS 7 might be released this month. In September, iOS 7 is ready to be supplied along with iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C.

News also says that there is no clarification on the release of iPad iOS 7 which has been held back until October. As per its traditions, Apple reveals its Q4 earnings during the end of October especially during the second half. Thus, it is expected that Apple might release Mavericks a day after its Q4 results.

The Mavericks OS X is believed to be an upgraded version and has better multi-monitor support, importantly an upgraded Finder, which might be one of the best functions so far. Some reports say that Apple announced Mavericks OS X release in June. There is a series of Apple products in line that are set to be released and are some of the most awaited products of the year. Apple is seeking to refresh its line of computers before the end of the year, which involves Mac Pro and Haswell MacBook Pro. Many other sources have said that Apple moved some of its OSX engineers to iOS in order to complete the new versions.

It has also come into picture that Mavericks will have an iBooks application and a better power management than OS X-powered Macs. Reports say that the developers are happy about the stability of the products and are excited over the expected launch soon. However, the users may have to wait a bit longer than their expectations. Even though the news is out, there is no update as to the real date of release, but if this is true, then January 2014 cold be expected to have a completely new series of Apple Products.
